Holdfast: after Anna Atkinsis a series of 49 prints of marinealgae hand-made by me via the contemporary DASS transfer process onto optimized Yupo paper. After earning my B.S. degree in Biology, I was awarded a National Science Foundation grant to conduct research at the University of Washington Friday Harbor Biological Station. I spent a summer on San Juan Island collecting marine algae from the surrounding intertidal area. I pressed each specimen onto a piece of absorbent cotton rag paper and carefully saved them for all the following passing years until the present day (1966-2026). As my interests evolved over the subsequent intervening years, Iearned an MFA in Art in 1995 with a specific interest inphotography. My research led me to Anna Atkins' Cyanotype prints of marine algae, which she collected over one hundred years ago from the intertidal waters off the coast of England. Inspired by her use of the then new Cyanotype photographic process, I have printed my algae via the now new DASS transfer process to create my homage to Anna Atkins
