Shawn Ryan Mayer is an American multidisciplinary artist whose practice bridges photography, drawing, video, installation, performance, digital media, found objects, and emerging technologies. His work combines physical materials with immersive and interactive processes to create unconventional experiences that move between humor, anxiety, play, and social observation.
Mayer often begins with ordinary images, objects, or behaviors that might otherwise go unnoticed. Towels, signs, street graffiti, commercial products, domestic decorations, online content, and fragments of the built environment become the material for works that question how value and meaning are assigned. By removing these elements from their original contexts and translating them into photographs, installations, textiles, videos, and customized objects, he asks viewers to reconsider the visual information that surrounds them every day.
Improvisation and emergent play are central to Mayer’s process. Rather than remaining committed to a single medium, he allows the materials and subject of each project to determine its final form. His background in music, drawing, animation, and technology informs installations in which sound, moving image, objects, and spatial relationships operate together. Folk practices and familiar cultural rituals are frequently combined with digital production, creating work that feels accessible while disrupting expectations about how art should look or behave.
In an early photographic series, Mayer repeatedly photographed towels hanging inside his home. He became interested in the amount of time people spend looking at supposedly unimportant objects and in the human forms he began to recognize within the draped fabric. The project transformed an ordinary domestic observation into a study of attention, repetition, photography, and the boundary between boredom and fascination.
Mayer received a Bachelor of Arts in Music and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Drawing from the University of Missouri in 2008. He earned his Master of Fine Arts in Arts and Technology from the University of Texas at Dallas in 2014. His interdisciplinary education allowed him to combine traditional studio practices with animation, digital production, performance, and interactive media.
From 2013 to 2014, Mayer was an artist-in-residence at CentralTrak, the former University of Texas at Dallas artists’ residency. During this period, he developed projects that questioned conventional definitions of photography, artistic media, and audience participation. He also participated in an exchange exhibition between CentralTrak and Lawndale Art Center intended to build connections between the Dallas and Houston contemporary art communities.
Mayer has presented several solo exhibitions at Liliana Bloch Gallery. Preteen Visions and Rituals as Recalled by a Full Grown Adult opened in 2016, followed by Prone Anxiety in 2019, Failed Perfection in 2020, and Customizable CONTENT-ment in 2024. Across these exhibitions, Mayer has explored memory, anxiety, failure, kitsch, consumer imagery, urban environments, and the ways ordinary materials can be transformed through display and repetition.
In Failed Perfection, Mayer used photography, projection, textiles, text, and installation to consider inadequacy and the repetitive experience of perceived failure. Kitsch and humor softened the exhibition’s more anxious themes, allowing beauty, awkwardness, and imperfection to occupy the same space.
His 2024 exhibition, Customizable CONTENT-ment, featured photographs of signs, walls, textures, street graffiti, and urban surfaces reproduced as curtains, towels, carpets, and other customizable domestic products. Many of the original photographs were taken in Portland. By moving images of public deterioration and visual disorder into the language of interior decoration, Mayer considered urban change, consumer choice, mortality, and the desire to aestheticize the surrounding world.
Mayer’s work has been exhibited at Lawndale Art Center, Art League Houston, CentralTrak, Dallas Contemporary, 500X Gallery, RO2 Art, Deep Ellum Windows, Bath House Cultural Center, Sweet Pass Sculpture Park, and Liliana Bloch Gallery. His professional experience has also included animation, television and commercial production, three-dimensional design, additive manufacturing, scanning, and stop-motion filmmaking.
