‘MARICAribe’ (2019) is an installation of pink flags on the beach in Gibara, Cuba. The flags, which were made by my mother and me, are pink versions of the territories belonging to other Caribbean states where homosexuality is illegal, or at least at the time of the intervention: Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Dominica, Grenada, Jamaica, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and Saint Lucia. Like fragments of colonial burden, the flags wave over the mainland to invite the opacity and empathy of the bodies on the other side of the ocean and the Caribbean. This project relates to a body of work. created by imagining the territorial beyond the binary logic of socially assigned gender, as a fundamental part of the ideological construction of nation-states. Thus, pink is used to desecrate military symbols, faggotizing them.
