'Silk Route' (2017) was constructed with more than 600 secondhand garments, all produced in some Asian country. Like other projects I have completed, this intervention in Guatemala City’s Central Park suggests a relationship between materiality, industry, and the past and present, but also between public and private spaces. In 1921, the Chinese Colony of our country built a traditional arch as a gift to the State of Guatemala to celebrate the Centennial of independence from Spain. This act of cultural diplomacy occurred at a defining historical moment, following anti Chinese campaigns throughout the Americas. The monument was destroyed a few years later by the government of Jorge Ubico. This installation refers to the destroyed arch, commemorating it through clothing that creates a silhouette on the park floor. Clothing that was given to people who were passing by that day, an act that caused the memory to disappear, but which was recorded in some kind of visual archive.
