Vince Jones is a Dallas-based contemporary artist whose practice spans sculpture, assemblage, collage, and installation. Working primarily with found and discarded materials, Jones transforms objects salvaged from dumpsters, thrift stores, garage sales, and overlooked corners of everyday life. Through unexpected combinations, he gives these familiar materials new identities and creates works that move between abstraction, humor, memory, and narrative.
Jones’s sculptures often begin with a single object that suggests a particular movement, association, or story. He then works intuitively, finding or constructing additional elements until the piece develops its own internal logic. Toilet tanks, ironing boards, folding chairs, cardboard, metal fragments, toys, photographs, domestic objects, and pieces of wood become part of assemblages that feel at once improvised and carefully resolved. Although Jones develops personal narratives while making each work, he leaves their meanings open so viewers can form their own associations.
Drawing from Post-Minimalist ideas of material honesty, chance, gravity, and process-based making, Jones challenges conventional distinctions between drawing, painting, and sculpture. His works may rest directly on the floor, extend across a wall, or interrupt the architecture of a room. Their placement asks viewers to reconsider their physical relationship to the artwork and become more conscious of how they move through the surrounding space. His practice has been compared with the materially experimental work of artists including Eva Hesse, Barry Le Va, and Richard Tuttle.
Humor and play are important elements of Jones’s work, but they are balanced by an underlying sense of seriousness. Witty titles and recognizable materials initially make the sculptures feel accessible, while their altered functions introduce questions about usefulness, deterioration, survival, and value. Objects that appear defeated, broken, or obsolete are given another life. Through this process, Jones transforms the mundane into something strange, imaginative, and unexpectedly affecting.
Jones earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Atlanta College of Art in 1986 and his Master of Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts in New York in 1990. He has lived and worked in Dallas for more than two decades, developing a distinctive practice rooted in the city’s contemporary art community.
His work has been exhibited at the Nasher Sculpture Center, Dallas Museum of Art, McKinney Avenue Contemporary, Pollock Gallery at Southern Methodist University, Brazos Gallery at Richland College, Shamrock Hotel Studios, Kirk Hopper Fine Art, and Liliana Bloch Gallery in Dallas. His work has also been presented at the Kleinert/James Center for the Arts in Woodstock, New York. In 2020, Jones created Ghost Trap for the Nasher Windows exhibition series, and in 2021, Liliana Bloch Gallery presented a solo exhibition of his found-object sculptures and collages.
Jones has also exhibited with Liliana Bloch Gallery as part of Dallas Gallery Day, connecting his practice to the wider network of contemporary galleries, artists, and collectors shaping Dallas art.
