Kathy Lovas is a Dallas-based photographer and multidisciplinary artist whose practice crosses photography, sculpture, installation, video, sound, artist books, and found-object assemblage. Although trained as a photographer, Lovas frequently moves beyond the conventional photographic print. Her work examines how an image can function as an object, record, memory, reference, or piece of evidence.
Throughout her career, Lovas has investigated what she describes as the ontology of photography. Her projects often begin with a personal experience, historical event, ordinary observation, or familiar object from her home or studio. Family photographs, inherited chairs, clothing, handwritten records, roadside signs, and household materials become part of visual narratives that consider photographic indexicality, the archive, and the frame.
Lovas approaches the archive as both a source of information and a space for interpretation. Rather than presenting photographs as fixed records, she enlarges, transfers, layers, rearranges, and combines images with sculpture, sound, text, and architectural space. Personal memories intersect with broader cultural histories, allowing familiar objects to take on new emotional and conceptual meanings.
Her background in biology has also influenced her interest in classification, evidence, observation, and systems of organization. In works such as UUMV / OOTD, Lovas photographed and classified clothing discovered inside her stolen vehicle, assigning invented Latin names to each item. Other projects use inherited photographs and furniture to explore family history, mortality, repetition, and the ways objects carry traces of previous lives.
Lovas earned a Bachelor of Science in biology from St. Mary’s College in Notre Dame, Indiana, and a Master of Fine Arts in photography from Texas Woman’s University in Denton. She was a fellow of the American Photography Institute National Graduate Seminar at New York University in 1991 and received a Mid-America Arts Alliance and National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in photography in 1995.
She has completed artist residencies at Project Row Houses in Houston, Connemara Conservancy in Allen, Texas, and the Atlantic Center for the Arts in Florida. Her solo exhibitions and site-responsive installations have been presented at Lawndale Art Center, Galveston Art Center, Women & Their Work, DiverseWorks, the Art Museum of Southeast Texas, the Arlington Museum of Art, the Old Jail Art Center, UT San Antonio Satellite Space at Blue Star, and other institutions throughout Texas and the United States.
Lovas has presented numerous exhibitions with Liliana Bloch Gallery, including Octave Studies, I’m So Glitche, #chair, #wegohigh, CLOTHING CRIMES...and Misdemeanors, LOOK, and Indexicality, the Archive, and the Frame. Her 2023 retrospective brought together more than three decades of photography, sculpture, installation, video, sound, and found-object work. The exhibition examined her continuing interest in how images point toward people, objects, memories, and events beyond the photograph itself.
Lovas taught photography and visual art throughout North Texas, including at the University of North Texas, Southern Methodist University, the University of Texas at Arlington, the University of Texas at Dallas, and Texas Woman’s University. Her work is held in collections including Capital One in Dallas, Pinhole Resource, Trisolini Gallery at Ohio University, and the University of North Texas Willis Library.
