Irene June: Artist Talk: Don't See the Coffin, Never Cries
Forthcoming event
Overview
Liliana Bloch Gallery
4:00 PM
Please join us for a special artist talk with Irene June Chau, whose new sculpture, Don't See The Coffin, Never Cries..., opens URBANO's fall season.
Drawing from personal history, Taiwanese-American identity, and cultural inheritance, June's work explores the complexities of language, family, spirituality, and belonging.
The sculpture takes its title from a Chinese proverb shared by the artist's stepfather, meaning "you won't cry until you see the coffin." Through its striking combination of found fibers, braided plastic, and references to traditional funerary forms, the work becomes a deeply personal self-portrait.
June received their MFA in Sculpture from the University of Texas at Austin in 2024 and currently teaches at Tarrant County College.
