URBANO joins the Big D in its city-wide arts festivity: Arts Month, which is designed to build awareness and appreciation for our current cultural renaissance. The gallery has prepared an explosive endeavor featuring the work of Ann Glazer, Shawn Mayer and Colton White. URBANO officially kicks off the 2017 spring season on April 7, during the event “We Own the Night”, presented by Arts + Culture Texas and Meddlesome Moth.
Ann Glazer’s piece, Stay in Touch is the newest public art installation of the artist. The 18 feet printed leaf speaks to fleeting connections we make with acquaintances and harks back to a time when numbers were still scribbled.
Shawn Mayer will screen his latest piece entitled Pirated Recompositions, a looping video of edited and re-composited films recorded first in the theater where they were shown, and then pirated from the internet. They showcase not so much the films themselves, but the space of the theater from which they were recorded. It highlights various aspects of the film going experience including the noise of the space and the audience, walking silhouettes, blurry shots, shaky cameras, and poorly/hastily edited content. The video is a contemplation on appropriation and its illegality within certain contexts inside and outside the perspective of art.
Colton White will present We, an interactive performance that deals with reflection. This is an intimate moment for two individuals to reflect upon themselves while comforting through the simple act of holding hands and looking at each other.
